Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybersecurity Awareness Month:

Why Data Destruction Is Your Last Line of Defense

Every October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month puts the spotlight on passwords, phishing, and network security. Those things matter. But there’s a risk most organizations overlook entirely — one that lives in a storage closet, a server room, or a stack of decommissioned laptops waiting to be dealt with.

Old hardware.

The data on a retired hard drive doesn’t disappear when you unplug the device. It doesn’t go away when you reformat the drive, reset the machine, or hand it off to a third party with a vague understanding of what they’ll do with it. Recoverable data can survive all of those steps. What eliminates it is certified physical destruction — and that’s a process that requires documentation, chain-of-custody, and a verifiable record that it actually happened.

Deleting Files Is Not Data Destruction

This is the most common misconception Arrow encounters. A factory reset returns a device to its default state. A reformatted drive still contains data that forensic recovery tools can reconstruct. Even physically damaged drives can yield recoverable information in the right hands.

Certified data destruction means the storage media is physically destroyed — shredded, crushed, or degaussed — in a documented process that produces a Certificate of Destruction tied to each specific asset. That certificate is your organization’s proof that the data is unrecoverable. It’s the documentation an auditor, a regulator, or a breach investigation would ask for.

Who This Applies To

If your organization handles any of the following, end-of-lifecycle device disposal is a compliance matter, not just an IT chore:

  • Patient records or healthcare data (HIPAA)
  • Financial account or transaction data (GLBA, SOX)
  • Student or staff records in schools and universities (FERPA)
  • Legal client files or case materials
  • Government or municipal records
  • Corporate employee or customer data

Every industry that manages sensitive information has an obligation to ensure it doesn’t leave the building on a device someone else can recover.

What Arrow’s Data Destruction Process Covers

Arrow provides certified destruction for hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, tape drives, cell phones, tablets, and other data-bearing media. Services include on-site and off-premises shredding, so organizations can choose the level of oversight that fits their compliance requirements.

Every destruction job is documented with a Certificate of Destruction. For organizations managing larger volumes — a server room refresh, an office cleanout, an ITAD project — Arrow tracks assets by serial number and provides full chain-of-custody reporting from pickup to destruction.

Make This the Month You Close the Gap

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a useful reminder to audit not just your active systems, but your retired ones. If your organization has hard drives or decommissioned devices sitting in storage, those devices represent unfinished business.
